Henry Funk

Mr. Henry Norman Funk, 84, entered into eternal life on January 12, 2010 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

He was born in Lebanon, PA on January 1, 1926, the son of the late Arthur B. Funk and Lucy Witman Funk.

Henry graduated from South Lebanon High School in 1943 and Penn State University in 1948 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was also a Navy Veteran of WWII. Henry retired as President of Arthur Funk & Sons, Inc., a 70 year old family owned construction company. He spent much of his life building churches and commercial buildings. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sarah "Nancy" (Curry) Funk, five children all currently living in Lebanon, Betsy (Funk) Reppert, wife of Dale Reppert, Susan (Funk) Klarsch, wife of Dan Klarsch, Robert Funk and wife Maureen, David Funk and wife Laurie, and Kenneth Funk and wife Julie; and 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, Walter Funk and wife Betty of Lebanon, Herman Funk and wife of Anna Mae of Florida, Wayne Funk and wife Jean of Lebanon; , Richard Funk and wife Ronie of Annville, PA; Geraldine Funk DeMars of Michigan; and Dorothy Funk West of Michigan. Infant brothers Robert Funk and Harry Funk preceded him in death.

Henry was an active member of Avon Zion United Methodist Church in Lebanon and served on various boards of the Eastern Pa Conference of the UM Church. He was instrumental in the development of Gretna Glen, a local United Methodist church camp, since its inception in the early 1960s and served on the site committee ever since. He also volunteered his time to many service organizations, both in the community and beyond. He was an active member of the Lebanon Rotary Club for over 38 years, having served a term as president. He also served many years as chairperson of the Rotary Youth Exchange, and along with his wife Nancy and their family, hosted many children from around the world. They also hosted many business persons through Rotary Group Study Exchange. Henry was also a highly valued volunteer with United Way of Lebanon County, and served on numerous boards and community organizations. An avid bicyclist, he volunteered his time to the Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails where he could be found mowing and trimming as recently as this past fall. Henry was also a member of the Contrary Club of Seeley''s Bay, Ontario and served on the board of directors of The Good Samaritan Hospital, Farmers Trust Co/Lebanon Valley Farmers Bank, Fulton Bank of Lancaster, Cedar Lanes, Lebanon County Economic Development, the South Lebanon Township Zoning Hearing Board and the Carpentry Advisory committee at the Lebanon County Career and Technology Center School.

For over 26 years Henry built and refurbished churches and other structures in Puerto Rico as a volunteer coordinator with Volunteers in Mission (VIM). He and the team also added a dental clinic to an existing medical clinic. He worked with Rotary to provide equipment, volunteer dentists, and funding for the clinic. He also provided construction expertise to the World Blindness Outreach in the Dominican Republic for nearly 10 years, and helped establish a dental clinic there as well.

His contributions in public services were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the 2006 Jefferson Award given to the individual who epitomizes public service in the Susquehanna Valley. He was chosen to represent the Susquehanna Valley at the national Jefferson Award in Washington, D.C. in 2007. Arthur Funk & Sons, Inc., and the Funk family received Cornwall Manor 2007 Founder Day Award. The Pennsylvania State University Agriculture Engineering Alumni Publication honored Henry as a Humanity Builder in their 2007 newsletter. In 2008, the Sertoma Club honored him with its Service to Mankind Award. Viewing from 6-8:30PM at Avon United Methodist Church, 1205 E. Cumberland Street, Lebanon on Friday January 15th 2010.

Funeral services will be at the Avon United Methodist Church, 1205 E. Cumberland Street, Lebanon, on Saturday January 16th . Viewing starting at 9:00 and the service beginning at 10:30 AM.

Interment will be at Mt. Annville Cemetery on Sunday January 17, 2010 at 2:00PM.
