Henry W. Shelly, 87, of Lebanon, died on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital.
He was born on Friday, February 16, 1923 to the late Erwin Shelly and Annie Shelly nee Houser in Cornwall. He served his country in the US Army in the 509th Light Pontoon Engineers attached to the Third Army building floating bridges throughout Europe''s many rivers advancing troops, tanks and equipment. He served in every major battle in the European Campaign, including the invasion in Normandy & Battle of the Bulge. He received 5 battlestars. He returned from WWII in 1945 and purchased a home with his wife in West Lebanon where he began a 30 year career working for Bethlehem Steel, much of it working at in the ore mine in Morgantown. After his retirement from Bethlehem Steel, he enjoyed his years as head of maintenance at Binner Assoc. in Schaefferstown and working in the Maintenance dept. at Annville-Cleona School District. Henry was a member of Mt. Olivet Lodge #704 where he was a master, Quittapahilla Forest No. 25 Tall Cedars and VFW Post #23. He enjoyed many trips to AC & Wildwood marching in parades and competing with the Tall Cedars Drill Team. He also enjoyed fishing, crabbing, boating and going to the beach and boardwalk in Delaware with his family and friends. He and his wife spent many years at their Indian River Inlet vacation home he built nestled on a lagoon in DogWood Acres surrounded by many friends. He was a regular at Heisey''s Diner after his retirement where he would meet his friends for coffee every morning.
Surviving are wife Emma M. Shelly nee Reppert, Lebanon; daughters Joyce A. spouse of Scott Plasterer, Lebanon, Faye L. spouse of James Aurand, Middleburg; son Dale E. spouse of Betsy Shelly, Palmyra; grandchildren Kevin Kreiser, Melissa Groff, Kelli Plasterer, Jeffrey Aurand, Bradley Aurand, Andrew Aurand; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandchild Michael Shelly; sister Elizabeth Gingrich..
Viewing will be on Friday, October 15, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Christman''s Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon, with masonic services beginning at 8:50AM.
Funeral services will be on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, following the service.
