John A. Heverling, 92, of Lebanon, died on Friday, March 07, 2014 at Elmcroft Assisted Living Community.
He was born on Wednesday, May 18, 1921 to the late Harry G. Heverling and Elizabeth Heverling nee Spayd in Lebanon. He was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps in World War II. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School in 1939. John worked as a Lebanon City police officer from 1948-1972 where he was chief of police from 1966-1972. He later worked as a security guard at Three Mile Island from 1972-1978 and security at Herco from 1979-1985. John enjoyed golf and was a member of Blue Mountain Golf Course where he had a hole-in-one three times.
Surviving are daughter Karen Heverling, San Jose; grandchildren Kristin Nommensen, Bakersfield, CA, Erika Myers, Concord, MI; great grandchildren Conner Nommensen, Brock Myers, Ainsley Nommensen, Brynn Myers, Ellery Myers, Reed Myers, Shelby Nommensen; brother Richard Heverling, Palmyra. He was preceded in death by wife Jane E. Heverling nee Ayers.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Christman's Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with full military honors, following the service.
