Martha “Jane” Black,93, of Columbia, Maryland, surrounded by her loving family died on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Gilchrist Hospice Center, Columbia, Maryland.
She was born on October 17,1927 to the late Clarence F Carter and Beulah Carter née Holtz in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was a member of Eastgate United Methodist Church (formally Palm Harbor UMC) Palm Harbor,
Florida. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, John W. Black.
Surviving are children Susan B.Krumlauf and spouse Mike and John R. Black and spouse Melynda Davis; grandchildren Christopher J. Freeman, Ryan M. Krumlauf; great granddaughter Zaria N. Krumlauf; brother Rev Dr.
John S. Carter (Phyliss); nephews Richard, David , Keith and Mark Carter and Mark Morelli. She was preceded In death by her brother Dr. Robert C. Carter (Dorsey).
Jane was a graduate of Simon Gratz High School. After graduation, she attended and graduated from Temple University. While a student at Temple, she was selected as an All American Majorette, an exceptional achievement. Her experience as Temple’s head drum majorette prepared her for this honor. Jane resided most of her life in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. After the passing of her dear husband her daughter thought it best to move her to Maryland to live closer to her family. She was a resident at Cornwall Manor for 18 years prior to moving to Maryland. She developed many lasting friendships at Somerford Place, her last place of residence. We remember Jane’s feistiness and sense of humor. Jack and Jane enjoyed being snowbirds in Oldsmar, Florida. They enjoyed hunting bargains at the local flea market (especially when snagging that elusive Beanie Baby). Time spent with brother John and wife, as well as, caring neighbors provided life time memories. Always having the mindset of the P.E. Teacher, swimming was a mandatory activity. She enjoyed making gifts for family and neighbors, many times utilizing her creativeness in ceramics and arts and crafts. She enjoyed decorating her home to reflect the various seasons/ holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of year. Nothing would make Jane smile more than an adorable snowman. In the later years she especially enjoyed receiving a gift of and sharing the love of Hallmark Christmas ornaments with her daughter, a passionate collector of Hallmark ornaments.
