Richard I. "Dick" Hess, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024. He was born on September 5, 1926, in Lebanon, to his late parents Irving L. Hess and Orpha Doughty (Imboden). Richard will be remembered for his devotion to his family, friends, and country. He leaves behind a son John Waters; grandchildren Lisa Sweigert (Hess), Richard I. Hess III, Benjamin R. Hess, Caleb J. Hess; 18 great grandchildren; loving sister, Susan Spang and spouse Ray; brother Larry Doughty and spouse Barbara; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by wife Lillian M. Hess nee Heisey; son Richard Hess, Jr.; siblings Charles R. Hess, Marian Leedy, Joanne Whisler, Ned W. Hess. Having served his country with honor, Richard was a proud veteran of the Army. He served in World War II, in the Panama Canal and Okinawa. Richard's commitment to community organizations was commendable. He was a lifelong member of the Eagles and VFW Post #23, where he actively contributed to their missions and events. Funeral services and ceremonies will be held in Richard's honor. A public viewing will take place on February 12, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Christman's Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon. Another public viewing will be held at the same location on February 13, 2024, from 11:00 am. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home on February 13, 2024, at 12:00 pm. Richard's final resting place will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where a graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 pm, also on February 13, 2024.
