Wayne S. "Rawbones" "Sarge" Gassert, 95, of Myerstown died on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Saturday, July 09, 1921 to the late Jacob W. Gassert and Edna E. Gassert nee Shirk in Lebanon. He was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and worked as a steelworker at Bethlehem Steel. He was a veteran of the Navy in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Wayne was a graduate of LHS and was a member of Mt. Olivet #704, VFW Post #23, Fireman's Association, 28th Infantry Division Association. He was involved with the community such as, a referee, umpire and official for the PIAA baseball, basketball and football and YMCA Biddy Basketball.
Surviving are children Rita M. spouse of Vernon Myer, Lebanon, Dennis M. spouse of Jeanne Gassert, Daphne, AL, Mark W. spouse of Gina Gassert, Peachtree Corners, GA; grandchildren Jacob Gassert and Theodore Gassert; brother John M. Gassert, Darien, GA; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife Elizabeth L. Gassert nee Heller; brothers Edwin W., Thurman J., Clarence J., Kenneth H. Gassert; sisters Elizabeth Pfautz, Geraldine Reed, Fern M. Klick.
Graveside services will be on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 11:00AM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with full military honors.
